“Sit up straight!” – we’ve all heard this recommendation during our childhood. But it’s often only at the adult age that we understand how important this recommendation is. It’s important to protect our back, not only for our health but also very useful for our beauty and to develop our self-confidence.

But how should I proceed to improve my posture?

It’s important to exercise the back muscles daily. Gravity pushes us downwards so we need to exercise what will make us stand against gravity, our muscles.

Pascale Nocera, a hatha yoga professor, has the following advice to improve our posture –

When standing or sitting at a desk, you should:

  1. Imagine a thread pulling the top of your head upwards: stretch your back and neck upwards

  2. Bring your shoulder blades slightly closer one to the other and

  3. push your shoulders slightly downwards to make sure they are relaxed

When standing, in addition to the 3 steps above:

1.put your feet apart (hip width), keep your legs straight and your arms along your body

The more you think about correcting your posture during the day, the more correct posture will come naturally. Each movement upwards to adopt the right posture is beneficial, even if you feel that you spend more time with poor posture as with correct posture.

The Student’s posture

1.On the floor, the goal is to feel the verticality of the back as opposed to a leg which is horizontally placed on the floor.

2.Keep the shoulders straight, relaxed (pushing them a bit downwards) and the fact of laying the hands on the knees helps us for that, the back nicely straight.

3.The head must be held naturally, with a slight upward stretch of the neck, as if there was an apple on the top of it

We need to think all the time about keeping a straight back, shoulder blades slightly closer one to the other, when walking, washing dishes etc. You can control your movements, but the more you exercise the right movements the better your body will memorize the right position.

Memorizing the right posture

It’s really important to train the body to adopt and to memorize the right posture.
